Yeah, John played some hot C6. I took a full day lesson with JH in 1981 in Nashville, and I was stunned when I heard and watched him play C6 up close. He also played some nice C6 stuff on Dicky Betts 1974 album, Highway Call.

John played some killer C6 during his tenure with the "Time Jumpers".

Seems to me that all of his solo CD's included some C6 work.

My mind's a tad fuzzy though.

John's cd "neck to neck" is a combination of E9th and C6th. About every other instrumental is C6th. Outstanding CD on either neck!!

Cool Cool

Neat performance. .. not just on steel. ... all the artists are top of the heap. ...Vince G had a really unique tone. .. anyone know what pickups and amp he used ?

Have that entire show on tape. This particlar episode featured individual performances by members of Vince's band during that period. The comment that you hear at the start of the clip when Vince states, "What a voice", is in reference to Dawn Sears. The show also featured a blazing rendition of 'Remington Ride' by Vince, Danny, and Albert each taking a cut...Had the pleasure of visiting with John at a steel show a few years back. He actually started playing at a young age using the C6 tuning (on a lap steel) before acquiring a pedal steel...Vince has been playing through his signature Little Walter amp for a while now. The tone however must come from his hands because it is presently very similar to the Rivera amps that he was using during the period that this show aired .

Jeff, one of my favorites by John was "Heart of a Clown". His version was tops.

And John was a monster on both. Many would be surprised at the C6 stuff played by many of the players that they only hear on records on the E9 neck. The first time I heard John on C6, I couldn't believe it.

Check out Willie Nelson's album, "Phases And Stages". John played some wonderful C6 on that record (e.g. "Heaven and Hell").

And of course there's killer E9 on there as well Wink Easily my favorite Willie Nelson album ever. I wore out my vinyl copy trying to learn John's stuff off it back in the 70's. Shocked

I think that if any Noobies or even some experienced players want to take a cue, watch John's right hand. Very minimal movement to make all that music, a lesson in that alone. Jeff Newman preached that very thing in his Right Hand Alpha, but always good to see it in action.

My 2 cents, YMMV.

Doug, here's the tune, "Hand Picked" from Dickey Betts' Highway Call album. Dickey Betts, Vassar Clements, Chuck Leavell and John Hughey burnin' it up on their respective instruments:

I know to John's many fans I'd be preaching to the crowd, but for those who haven't heard or purchased John's CDs, it's a no-brainer for anyone looking for truly outstanding playing. His E9 work is beautiful, smooth, emotional and evocative, and his C6 is smoking hot while always remaining melodic and tasteful, never just a "bunch of licks." ANY of his CDs are some of the best steel recordings out there. What a monster.
