When I first started playing steel I always had to have on cowboy boots so I'd look the part even if I couldn't quite play that well. I use to go watch guys like Herbie Wallace, Bobby Symour, Doug Jernigan and so on and noticed they didn't wear cowboy boots at the shows I saw them play. They wore very plain loafers or casual shoes. Now that I'm older, I still can't play worth a dam but I've gotten away from the boot scene and have been for many years now. I like the shoes with soles that are thinner and flexible so I can feel the pedals and control them a little better. I also stay away from boot because they inhibit my ankle movement some and add too much height to my volume pedal foot. I played in my socks for awhile till one night some girl pointed out my big toe sticking out the end of my sock Embarassed I was curious if anyone had preferences or if there's even a standard that you all stick with. When ya think about it, it's a pretty important part of controlling that thing. Anyway, I just curious. Smile |

track shoes - narrow, thin soles, low profile - perfect! _________________ 2016 Williams D12 8 x 8, 2015 Williams D12 8 x 8, 2023 Williams S12 4 x 5, Milkman Amps, 1974 Gibson Byrdland |

For beginners: pick one shoe type and stick with it. Changing the feel feels weird and makes an unpleasant distraction.
Once you have the hang of it: doesn't matter. I have played in and gotten along with almost everything from heavy work shoes to thinsoled dress shoes. Only things I can't deal with are lug-soled river sandals and stocking/bare feet. But I know many good players who play in socks. Gives me a chance to steal their shoes... _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Boots! I used to get the toes stuck in between
the pedal rods but I raised my pedals bit higher. Problem solved |

Use a soft soled shoe, or often a bedroom slipper. I used to play in socks, but it was an annoyance to have to put shoes on every time we had a break. Besides, I was setting a bad example for our band...the drummer played barefoot. lol. |

A post containing this subject pops up every so often and I always reply with my stock answer. Whatever your daily foot wear happens to be, that should be what you wear while playing. If you normally wear loafers, dress shoes, sneakers, etc., you are not going to feel comfortable playing in boots. I however, have worn Western boots exclusively for many years and cannot play well in any other style. |

This topic has popped up several times even in the short time I've been around. I endorse Lane and David. When I very first started playing, I had a particular pair of old trainers that I kept just for practising steel and I found anything else impossible. Now I can play equally well (or badly) in anything I would normally wear except work boots at the one extreme and slippers at the other. And certainly not bare feet - far too painful. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

I dont even bother playing in any thing else but socks. ..I just can't feel the pedals the way I want to.
One of my band mates keeps bugging me about getting some fancy socks for stage... I see nothing wrong with black dress socks so I don't really get what he is referring to. |

Anything that draws attention to the pedals has to be good, otherwise their crucial contribution goes unnoticed.
I can't play in socks, because for some reason my feet have a lower pain threshold than the rest of me; but if I could I would need no urging to explore the novelty market. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

I wear Alligator boots on stage, but for home practicing I wear whatever I'm wearing. I try not to be too sensitive about it. _________________ A.K.A Chappy. |

I can't think of any other task or occupation for which I would wear just socks - I would feel very vulnerable to injury and, er, spillage. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

I have an old pair of Nike's that are so comfy and work well, problem is they're worn out and I can't find any similar....
No snakeskin cowboy boots - I don't need any more attention than what I already get - especially if my playing is off! _________________ Red Emmons D10 fatback #2246D with sweet Hugh Briley split cases, Black Emmons S10 #1466S, '73 Fender "Snakeskin" Twin Reverb, Peavey Nashville 400, Line 6 Pod XT, Fender 400, Fender Stringmaster Double-8, too many guitars, one bass! |

Anything with soft, thin soles works for me. And "flat" soles seem to help, instead of shoes that curl up at the toes and/or sides.
My 18-yr old son finally got over the embarrassment of me wearing them on gigs.
