Topic: Where do you measure cone on Dobro |

In regards to my posting on up grades to the Morgan Monroe Square Neck...
In determining the size of the cone....
Where do you take the measurement?
Do you measure from the outside edge of the lip
or do you measure from where the cone dips in to the body of the guitar?
Or maybe it's measured from some other point?
I want to order one right away but I want to be sure to order the correct size!

Russell, to determine the size of the cone, you measure the maximum outside diameter. AFAIK, they are all in the neighborhood of 10-1/2 inch OD. If the replacement is a little small, it should be fine. If the replacement is a little large, you can trim it with a scissor. With the cone stable on your bench or in your lap, hold the scissor steady and turn the cone into it. Good luck with your project. HTH.

Some of the older Dobros are 10 1/2. The newer ones are all 10 9/16. I would fully expect yours to be 10 9/16.

No real need to measure. Just get a quality spider bridge cone. As mentioned most modern cones for "Dobro" are 10 9/16. You may have to sand the edges to fit depending on what shape the guitar's top is in.

My 1974 OMI Dobro is 10 1/2. Both the Quarterman I bought years ago and the new Beard I just bought needed to be trimmed.
Speculating here - I imagine there exists some inconsistency in cone opening diameters historically. You can always make a cone smaller hence the 10 9/16" cone. |

Howdy....
Due to unexpected car repairs (when are they expected?)
I am not rolling in $$$$
So I ordered a Beard Standard Cone (not the Legend)
a Bone Nut and Maple/Ebony Saddles.
I'm sure it will make an amazing difference!

It's also typical that a Dobro of that age would have the top "egg out" where the hole is no longer a perfect circle.
You either have to trim the cone or route the top (Beard setup) so the top would be good for another 40 years
