finished this guitar for steve atwood. he picked out the pickups for it and wanted the controls where they are. it sustains fabulously as you can tell by the last chord of the little demo i did. the song is send in the clowns. i went on youtube and listened to sondheim play it and tried to to cop some of his nice chords. there is a vol control for each pickup and a master tone. very precise how you balance the two pickups. i found it best to turn the pickup closest to the bridge up and then bring the other pickup vol up until just a smidge below the vol of the the other pickup.
the tuning he asked for is from low to high.....
E F# G A C D E G B C E F#
i will be starting to build some new guitars next week if anyone has an interest in making them something, just send me an email. thx!!!

Fabulous guitar! I told Bill at the start all I really needed was a plank with 12 strings, and we agreed on a price, but he insisted on building a great instrument and kept me involved in the decision making and sent photos all the way through the process. As I understand it the sustain comes from the quality of the wood (maple aged 30 years), the fact that except for the two wings it’s all one piece, the solid headstock, 24†scale length, and string-through design. |

Hi Bill,
That guitar looks and sounds great. The sustain is brilliant as is the tone. If I could find a suitable piece of wood here in the UK I'd be tempted to make a 12 string myself. Now for the question, what would you call the tuning?

i dont know about the tuning. i didnt even really try to analyze it. i just worked out the song using it. it has a lot of potential. there is a 6th in it for sure, so maybe just some kind of extended 6th.
yall got trees over there in the UK! find a nice big piece of english walnut. that would make a wonderful instrument. |

Thanks for the replies Bill and Doug,
I play mainly A6 and C6. I think if I tried something like this tuning I could play some of my favourite Jazzy stuff, my all time favourite being Nuages by Django. I've listened to all of the recent renditions of Nuages by the established "Forumites" and I'm amazed at the different "slants" that come through with the different tunings. I started on 6 string about a year and a half ago, but I prefer 8 string now. 12 string would be a whole new experience that I may enjoy.
Yes Bill we still have some trees here in UK, it's just nore difficult to find a good piece of the required dimensions. But I'm looking !!!

My idea on this tuning was to base it around regular guitar tuning EADGBE, to make it easier to play from sheet music for songs I used to play on classical guitar. Then I added the low G and the middle E to include a tuning I was using on my 8-string (for the Bach Bourree - EGADEGBE). The F#s and Cs are just guesses as to what might be useful. I’ll be dropping the low E to D for the first few songs I want to learn and adjusting other strings as needed. |
