Older stuff:

Wynn Stewart with Ralph Mooney
Early Conway Twitty with John Hughey
Buck Owens with Ralph Mooney, Jay McDonald, Tom Brumley
The aforementioned Panther Hall album

New(er) stuff:

Joe Ely with Lloyd Maines
Neil Young with Ben Keith
Son Volt with Eric Heywood (I should mention that Mark Spencer plays on the newer albums with a unique style and tuning)
Drive-by Truckers, Star Room Boys with John Neff
Heirlooms of August - Bruce Kaphan is the steel player

Buddy Emmons on Duane Eddy's "Twang a Country Song". Some of the best steel you will ever hear. IMHO
1963 RCA recording Smile

Anything Jay Dee Maness and Tommy White. Specifically but not limited to any of the Desert Rose records with Jay Dee, and pay special attention to the new Willie Nelson record Band of Brothers to hear Tommy.

I agree with the above recommendations, at least the ones I've heard.

If you like Son Volt/alt-country, you're probably already aware of Lloyd Maines on Uncle Tupelo's "Anodyne" album. Or Greg Leisz on Whiskeytown's "Strangers Almanac." There's not a ton of steel on either of those records -- but each has a couple of tunes with PSG that are worth the price of admission.

For your tastes, required reading includes the album Sweetheart of the Rodeo by the Byrds and anything by the New Riders of the Purple Sage (psg player was Jerry Garcia on first record, Buddy Cage on all others).

Adam, Their are a lot of good ones. If you want some of the early day country and pure steel out front I would suggest Buck Owens live at Carnegie Hall. Tom Brumly is at his finest. A ZB Steel & Fender Twin Amp.
It can still be brought on CD. Good Luck, J.R.

Since you mentioned the Burritos, you really should look into Chris Hillman and Herb Pederson's "Bakersfield Bound" album (not to be confused with another great album, "Bakersfield" with Paul Franklin on steel). JayDee Maness tears it up on steel on "Bakersfield Bound!"

And, of course, with Hillman being a founding member of the Burritos back in the day, it's no surprise that several of the tracks on this record sound like they share DNA with the "Gilded Palace of Sin."

Hi Adam,

Get a hold of "The Hit Sounds Of Lloyd Green." The whole album is a clinic on how to play balls to the wall gorgeous steel guitar. And, he only used two knee levers I think.

This may be a bit oblique, in that there's over a hundred people referenced:

http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=208507

But the good news, YOU get to choose what's essential! Smile
If I HAD to pick three I'd go with:

Debashish Bhattacharya - Calcutta Slide Guitar 3
Mike Perlowin - West Side Story
Dave Easley - Live at the International Steel Show

But I'm glad I don't have to pick three.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Roger Miller's "A trip to the country" one of Buddy's finest.

Dave, I like the way you think. Laughing

My list, in no particular order
1- Any of Joe Goldmark's CDs.
2- Any of Joe Goldmark's CDs with Jim Campolongo and the 10 gallon cats.
3- Pete Grant- Greetings From California.
4- Jack West and Curvatutre (With David Phillips on steel,)-Around About Now.
5- Paul Franklin-A Christmas collection.
6- Curly Chalker- Counterpoint/Big Hits on Big Steel double LP released by Tom Bradshaw.

And my favorite, Ned Selfe- Errands in Paradise
Ned Selfe's CD is not so much a "steel guitar CD," as it is a CD of wonderful music, all of which was composed be Selfe, that he just happens to play on a steel and dobro.

This is terrific CD that deserves to be heard by more people.

If you are just starting out then get the original recording of Ray Price's "City Lights". Just two pedals, no knees. Learn not just the music but the feel.

From the reference, one of my picks:
Jim Cohen wrote:
May I recommend a visit to: www.steelguitarjazz.com ?

I concur on West Side Story and the Black Album,
and 'Slider' gets a big honorable mention.

(But really, with Lloyd Green, Tommy White and Jerry Garcia, who can chose just three?)

But right now it's Southwest Portals by Bruce Lofgren & Doug Livingston

rumors of the death of steel guitar have been highly exaggerated

I forgot to include Joe Savage's "Perennial Sideman." Anther outstanding CD.

We should distinguish between all-instrumental recordings and those in which the steel is backing up a singer. Everything on my list is all-instrumental.

I want to thank Dave and Charlie for including my West Side Story CD in their recommendations. Selections from it and my 2 others can be heard at my web site and Soundcloud page. The inks are in my signature.
