Had YOU just went out and purchased a very expensive multi-neck pedal steel guitar, with eight on the floor and five hanging........
What would be your choice and in what order would you rate the most destructive TONE/sound altering electronic affects stomp boxes for that expensive new, expertly designed, well engineered and beautiful manufactured electric pedal steel guitar?
Just curious..........with so many choices available these days. |

I build my own "destructive, TONE/sound altering" boxes. My first choice is reverb. My second is a vibrato or tremolo circuit. Third would be a delay.

Ray,what do you mean by "destructive?" Effects, when used properly can greatly enhance the steel. There are times and places where they are called for. There are also some players who overuse them, or use them inappropriately. But the effects themselves are only tools. Don't blame them for those who misuse them.
Be that as it may, a lot of older effects can kill your tone even when turned off, merely by being in the signal path. They can cause unwanted distortion, and/or rob the signal of os high end frequencies.
The solution to this is to bypass the effect entirely when it's not in use, and fortunately, many manufacturers are now putting bypass loops in their effects.
I have some of these older effects, and had to rig up a box with 4 bypass loops in order to use them. The effects were always kept on, and either routed through or completely away from the signal path.
I still have the wiring diagram for the bypass loops, in case anybody wants it.

I think it’s like Mike said, enhance not destroy is what we’re after with effects.
I’m pretty new to the “Effects†club...I played about 40 years with just an amp with builtin reverb and the very first Sho~Bud Allen Bradley Pot pedal I bought...
Not being around effects back in the 70’s what I thought I was hearing effects wise, to me was gimmicky and rather than enhance the steel, I felt it took away from it...so like I said, it took me 40 years to get my feet wet, and I’m happy that I did.
The first thing I did was get a Profex ll and initially wasn’t as impressed as I’d hoped, until I added some George L cables, which helped clean up some of the noise I was experiencing...Then Jim Lindsey talked me into adding a second amp, because the Profex ll was a stereo unit, and after doing so was thrilled with what I was hearing...and last but not least, plugged a L’il Izzy into my guitar first and WOW...the lights came on, bells started ringing, tears started welling up in my eyes...you get the picture...I’m really happy with the additions of these effects, and the effect it has had on my sound...now If I could get someone who could actually play the thing so I could really tell how good it could sound.

Although not electronic, I would say my hands are the most destructive. Ring modulator would also be my first choice. Excessive delay would be next.
