Hello for New Zealand, I was wondering if the Rains guitar company is still making Guitars ? I have a 2006 Bob Rains made SD10 4x5, and was looking at getting the undercarriage upgraded, but I cant find anything on the web about the company, any help would be cool Des H

Des, To my knowledge Gary Carpenter is building the Rains Guitars in Ft. Worth TX

I have not talked with Bob Rains, Gary or Steve in a long time, but they are all fairly good friends of mine and Top notch players and dealers to boot.
Last I talked to Bobby Rains he was in Abilene TX

According to Chuck Blake, Gary makes the D-10, and the SD-10 is made by Curtis Hogue.

| Unless he's gotten re-involved within the last month, Gary's no longer involved with Rains. They are still being made, though, and Steve Lamb has the new owner's name if needed. |

Somebody asked me about Rains not too long ago, wanting to know what I thought about them. The best I could tell them was that I'd heard great things about the guitars but I wasn't too sure they really wanted to be contacted about new orders.
That's still the way it seems---you need to find the right friend of a friend to find out who to contact and how to reach them. |

John, the upgrade consist of making the crossbars on E9th shorter and also an upgrade to the bar that goes across back. Don't really know what that consist of with the bar but Gary said it adds to the tone and it sure does. I had mine upgraded and the pedal action was easier and more positive and I could tell a tonal difference with more sustain and heck, it was already a great guitar, just made it better.

Mine got a whole new changer as well, easier pedal action.

| I have a 2012 D10 Rains PSG, when I bought it I changed the pickup to a Telonics pickup and sold the original pickup that came with the guitar. After 2 years trying to get the sound I want I now want to change the Telonics pickup as I find I do not like the very treble tone . I have tried adjusting the tone controls on my amplifier but to no avail. A friend of mine suggested that because it is a mica body guitar the best pickup to fit would be a BL705. I would very much appreciate your input on the subject before I commit to purchase a new pickup. |

The 705 is the best one ive found for mine and ive at least 7 diff ones in it

| 2006 sounds practically like a new modern steel to me. how much does an upgrade cost? or is it like a factory recall cause they made something wrong? |

There was nothing wrong before with the rains steels. Gary is a perfectionist and found a way to improve his steels then he offered the improvement to anybody who wanted it.
Like it was stated earlier the improvement was shortening the crossbars on the E neck. Made for smoother and more solid action and on a more subtle level seemed to help with the tone.
Gary is still building the D10s as far as I know. He is just not interested in the Internet.
