I don't know if I'll buy this book or not.
The only people in the book that I am familiar with are Geo Barnes, Gino Bordin, Jerry Byrd, Cindy Cashdollar, Bud Isaacs, Tony Mattola, Joaquin Murphy, Gabor Szabo, Bill Tapia and Rick Aiello.
The rest are unfamiliar to me. Can someone tell me what they are famous for and why they are in the book? However, the book looks beautiful. Maybe I'll buy it just to have it and to say "I have that book".

Not to be presumptuous, but perhaps you could learn something by reading the book. Lotsa people purchase books and read 'em for that very reason. |

Okay Wally, I will give you one example: Amos Garrett
Amos played with Ian and Sylvia in the late '60s.
A lot of folks first really took notice of him as the lead guitar player on Maria Muldaur's big hit "Midnight at the Oasis." Surely you remember that one?
Amos went to join Paul Butterfield as lead guitarist in his Better Days group that put out two very good albums.
He has done session work on hundreds of albums, I count him among my favorite pickers and even have an instructional DVD he put out a number of years ago. _________________ Mark |

First, thanks, guys!
Wally, there are some articles I write for guitar magazines that are just paying gigs. They call me up and say "We need an article on this subject. Do you have time and interest to write it?" Not so for Guitar Dreams. Everything in this book is there because it's about people that I was personally passionate and curious about.
For example, there's a series of pieces in the book about the story behind the people who played on famous records - like Amos - or Skip Pitts who created the Wah Wah pedal parts on Shaft, or Louie Shelton, the studio ace on several 1960s Monkees hits, and Eric Weissberg who played Dueling Banjos and has had to spend years explaining he didn't plagiarize the tune.
While I drive my self nuts over gear like many people here, I'm much more interested in the people behind the music. I largely don't care which year knobs changed on a given guitar model but I'm very curious about why and how someone learned to play music or what motivates a luthier to design a guitar the way they do. I figure if I'm not genuinely interested in a subject, why should anyone else be? _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

That is why I like your writing so much, Andy. _________________ http://www.steelinstruction.com/

Wow! I'd be interested in this for the George Barnes piece alone.

Thanks for the laugh, Jack Hanson. Deft. I'll be ordering a copy, too. I should probably re-read Andy's Lap Steel Guitar for the stuff I've forgotten. Another great use for books. _________________ ...but you are the music / while the music lasts (TS Eliot) |
