I’ve just been invited to participate in a concert at the Silver Lake branch of the Los Angeles public Library on Monday, August 18 at 6 PM. There is always more than one artist at these concerts. I do not know who the others will be.

I've done some restaurant gigs lately. When I do these I have to keep things in the lighter side. I might want to play something by Stravinsky, but the manager of the restaurant prefers that I play Somewhere Over The Rainbow. I try to present a balanced program.

However, I’m free to play more serious music at the library. For this concert, I will perform works by Debussy, Stravinsky, Eric Satie, and an arrangement of Camille Saint-Seans’ ”The Swan.” I will also lighten things up a bit by playing a medley of tunes from “The Sound Of Music,” and the tune “The Lonely Shepherd” from the film “Kill Bill (Volume one.)”

Here's a link to the version of The Lonely Shepherd that was used in the film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsgHyzwmbnQ

The library is located on the corner of Glendale and Silver Lake Blvds. Admission is free. I hope you who are within driving distance will attend.

Great news, good for you, Mike.

Folks, if you live in the Los Angeles, please attend the show to show support for Mike and also for the steel guitar in a non-country, non-Hawaiian setting, it needs far wider exposure, and this is how it's done. If attendance is off the chart, they're much more likely to invite Mike back again, exposing our instrument to more and more listeners.

Wish I lived closer, Mike, I'll be there in spirit.

Thanks John.

I've said more than once that my goal is not to introduce classical music to people who play and/or love the steel guitar, but rather to introduce the steel to people who play and/or love classical music.

Of course, I want other steel guitarists to come see me. But among the people who will be attending are an orchestra conductor, a concert pianist, the music director of a local church, and a music professor from the University of Southern California. The man from the church has previously heard me play at an earlier performance. None of the others have ever seen a pedal steel guitar before, and several have expressed interest in doing so.

Joel, I'll see you there. Anybody else who can come, by all means, please do.

Thanks Frank. This will be the 6th time this year that I have performed at one of these events, and the word is starting to get out among the local symphonic musicians: "there's this guy who plays this new weird instrument" etc.

Some people will be attending the concert out of curiosity. But some will be there because they heard one of my previous performances.

In my previous post I mentioned that an orchestra conductor will be attending, He's coming to check me out for a possible guest soloist spot with his orchestra. He also expressed an interest in coming over to my rehearsal studio and spending some time looking at my steel and trying to play it.

Today the library.Tomorrow, Carnegie Hall. Laughing
