Guys,

I've done a forum search and I don't find anything (in short order) to answwer my question.

Would anybody care to expound upon the history and background of the Derby Guitars ?

Opninions would be welcome.

Info on how the company started, how long it produced guitars.

Are some vintages better than others, etc...

Noteable players of this brand ??

I'm just interested and wanting to know more for my own personal edification.

Anybody care to share ???

I love my Derby and I'm very interested in the history and background of the company. John Widgren had some very nice things to say about the Stepps while he did a great job of setting mine up (which was a bit of a mess when I got it)

Lynn Owsley has been playing Derby for a long time. Ron Elliott was playing one when he was here in Florida for a show about 5 or 6 years ago.

Forum member Danny Hammers is one of the people that keep the Derby room going at the ISGC, he may have some history.

I've heard some that sounded really great. I always wondered how the company got its name.

Ive never known much about the Derby company. Always heard really good things about the guitars though. I would like to know what year they started as well.

I recall Charlie Stepp giving an in depth interview in 'Steel Guitar World' magazine a few years back. May answer whatever questions you may have.

I found an old address for the company.

It was in brooks,KY.

That's just south of Louisville.

I wonder if the KY Derby influenced the selection of a name..

I thought the "Derby" was because of the Louisville connection?

Derby Steel Guitars was founded by Charlie Stepp in a suburb of Louisville Kentucky and was named for what Louisville was most noted for, the Kentucky Derby. We were close personal friends up to the time of his death. I visited with him at his factory and at his home when I was living in the Lexington Kentucky area for several years. He himself was a steel player and his guitars were quality plus. I lost a close friend when he passed away. You will never go wrong when you buy a Derby steel guitar.

Fred,

I've seen a few Derby's that had a logo that looked like a Hat and a Cane on it. Then the most common logo I've seen is a big "D" with Derby Steel out beside it.

Is the Hat logo and earlier version ??

I'll be darned. I would have bet my steel that Derby was an homage to Buddy's hat. Never occurred to me to think otherwise.

Derby Hat/Cane was earlier then the Big "D", but don't have clue when the change took place. Big D has been used for quite some time.

There was a script logo also that was used between the hat and cane era and the later logo with the large D.
