I notice that when I play C6, the right hand palm rests on the back edge of the pickup and it occurred to me that the early lap steels were made with a bridge over the pickup, I suppose for that purpose; a hand rest. Does anyone think a similar bridge for pedal steels would be a help? How would it affect you palm-blocking?

Nope. I think it would be a handicap. You can always move your hand up and down the neck to get whatever tone you want. A bridge like you mention, would put you hand (in my opinion) to far up the neck and unable to get a more trebly sound when wanted. It might affect your palm blocking, but you would have to try it out to know.

I once bought a bass that had a hand rest right between the two pickups. It had to come off for the very reason Richard describes. Different instrument but same principle.

Richard, you could just move your hand up the neck , leaving the bridge behind. to get the desired tone.

What if you wanted a brighter tone? There is a reason the builders don't put one on. When I had my National triple 8 guitar, I took the pickup covers off because I didn't like my hand being so far up the neck.
