Just stumbled upon this album, which has David Phillips playing pedal steel in a very hip jazz context. You can hear a few short clips at this page:

http://www.amazon.com/Bing-The-Charlie-Hunter-Trio/dp/B000005GZ9/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395706518&sr=8-1&keywords=charlie+hunter+bing+bing+bing

Are any of you familiar with David and his playing? I'm liking this a lot! Smile

Listening to David Phillips on my favorite all-time record, Tom Waits' Bone Machine, really convinced me that I needed to buy a pedal steel.

Jimbeau,

Hip context indeed...Good stuff!

A Google search will lead you to several threads on Davis Phillips, YouTube videos, etc. But you have probably done that already.

Best,

Bob

I just heard this the other day on NPR while driving and scrambled to Shazzam / Soundhound it with my phone, thanks for reminding me to buy it!

This has two of my favorite things: Acid Jazz and pedal steel. My ears almost cried. Can't wait to have my face melted again.

Hah! Nathan that's EXACTLY how I discovered it: it was transitional music between two NPR stories and I was driving and scrambled for my SoundHound before it was over and Bingo! it found it! I was thrilled too. How about that! Smile

Good stuff... for them to pick that exact song and the part, that showcased the steel for the segue -only shows people appreciate the sound of the steel.

It was really refreshing and to think that album is nearly 10yrs old!

Be safe scramblin' for the SoundHound Jim

David is probably the busiest steeler in the S.F. area. He has amazing control of a 12 string Universal guitar, and loves to play out of the box, but can play straight country also. He's also a very nice guy and a good friend.

Cool! I was recently reacquainted with David after many years from when I lived in SF in the late 70s. Great player and super nice guy. Cool to see in this context. And at the 500 Club! I lived next door on Guerrero while there. Never imagined it as a venue for music... Way to go David.

When I was still living in Austin in 2002, David came to play at South-by-Southwest-SXSW with Jack West to perform their CD release "Curvature".

He asked me if I would supply him with an amp for his Jazz set at the ''Elephant Room" club on South Congress Blvd. I brought my Rivera TBR-5 tube amp & speakers to plug his head unit into.

Wow their impressive performance was just like the CD.

I wish I'd had a recording of that set. Somebody does! ... and a video also I think.

Equally impressive is an Album David contributed to with a group called The Potato Eaters. Experimental rock ? HERE:

I've had the privilege of playing and recording with some of the best steel players in the world and David is definitely one of them. It's always a pleasure to hear his unique approach to just about anything you throw his way. When I hear that David is on a gig I always accept the job and he deserves all the praise he gets...

Too Kind...
Thanks Friends and Friendlies!
I am most appreciative of the kind words and any interest in my musical attempts what so ever.
It is true that I like the unusual and challenging interspersed with the more traditional musics.
All the best, David Phillips

"Jack West and Curvature": a new name for me...

Lots of music on iTunes. Which album to get for the uninitiated?
