I went from XP on my old computer to Windows 8 on a new one - I used to use 2-3 GB of data download and it jumped to 6-8 GB on the new one - Went back to the old computer for a month and it dropped back down - Best Buy checked the computer and didn't find anything running that should cause this - Is "8" the cause or is there anything else I can check - "Keep getting billed $$$ for extra Data download"
Just wondering!

Yes, the live tiles eat up data. They are constantly being pushed updates to whatever information each tile displays.

Also, you are probably getting more frequent security updates than with XP.

So Wiz - If I just deactivate (minimize) them, that should help?

Minimizing tiles leaves them turned on and receiving data. You'll need to right-click the active tiles and select the option to "turn live tile off" from the Apps bar below.

There is more information on EightForums.com

Also, the information in this article shows how to edit the Group Policy Editor to shut off all live tiles completely. Your version of Windows 8 may not have access to the Gpedit function.

To access Group Policy, you must have Windows 8 Pro or Windows 8 Enterprise.
