When I have to replace a string and I don't want to break up a set, I use a replacement single string of any different brand. Normally these replacement strings sound very similar and you cannot hear or feel the difference.
Last week I broke the 5th string on my Universal and replaced it with a Thomastik-Infeld plain steel .017 string. This string is far superior to the existing strings on the guitar. The tone is sweeter and the volume is louder. Also, the string has a brass color, which helps in visualising string groups.
Does anyone have experience with these strings? I would like to have a couple of sets of these, but it could be a problem replacing singles with other brands.

I have used Thomastik strings for electric bass, and those are of the highest quality and sound.

| I've never heard of Thomastik making a pedal steel set-it's a European company, so mabe there ain't much call for 'em! But I have used them on acoustic, and electric guitars, as well as my old Kay bass, they're pretty good wires. |
