My Peavey NV112 and my Special 112 head both have blue and yellow speaker connector wires coming out of the amp chassis. Which wire should go to the positive terminal of the speaker? And does it matter?
Wish they would use red and black. |

Not sure about the 112, but factory wiring orientation for the Nashville 400 is yellow + blue -.
If you're only using one speaker in an application it really doesn't matter. It's always wise to follow convention though to eliminate confusion. |

Thanks Jerry. I like to put things back together the way they were; need to pay better attention when I take them apart. |

If you have a digital multi meter you can test the chassis ground against the speaker ground is some amps. Also, if you snip a few inches of each color and attach it to the speaker terminal or duplicate the color wire and put a 9 volt batter to the wires. The positive on the battery will push the speaker forward and the reverse will pull the speaker back.
If you hook up a speaker wrong the amp will sound thin or hollow.
My 2 cents,

You're welcome. Same here. Good enough for Peavey, good enough for me.
Generally, I have some red plastic tape I wrap the pos. lead with before unhooking. Otherwise, a piece of masking tape with a + mark, or just tie a knot in the pos. lead......assuming I remember to do it beforehand. |

A speaker will pull back if hooked incorrecrly ...It will push out if the wiring is correct, Its very hard to see it happen sometimes, Just my opinion _________________ SO MANY LURES, SO LITTLE TIME.... |

using a 9volt battery wired to the speaker will show whether the speaker moves forward (correct wiring) or if it moves back (incorrect wiring ) |

Good call Craig!
Guys, don't let any "amp tech" try to tell you otherwise. I can tell the difference on the lower notes. It's true, when the polarity is correct, the speaker pushes or "pumps" the sound outward instead of sucking it in.
I know some will say that it only matters when an extension cabinet is used, or two speakers in one cab. Unless the speakers are intentionally wired out of phase in bass cabinets(one pushes out, the other draws in, in sync) you should always have both wired positive!
Lower, fast, pick blocked notes will be the most noticeable, when polarity is reversed. |
