Buddy is on break from "Ask Buddy" and I'm psyched about my recent "discovery"...

Has anyone ever tried to work out "At E's" (on the '77 live album)? Maybe everyone knows this but me, but turns out that the entire walking bass line for the theme can be played (simultaneously with the melody) on the bottom 2 strings using pedals 5 & 8 on the C6 (or universal) neck.

There's some finagaling with the bar to use the open bottom strings, but what a gas it is to play! Does anyone know if Buddy plays it this way? On the '77 album it sounds like the bass player is playing the bass lines, but it can definitley be done "acapella".

Dirk,

There is a player I know of that could do it note for note and if you closed your eyes you would swear it was Buddy!! And that player is a regular member of this forum.

One of the most incredible steel guitar players I ever heard is Bobby Boggs!! When he was a kid, he played more steel than many of us will ever play. He is in a word, unreal! His idol of course was BE. And his playing followed every note!

Unfortunately and I pray this has improved thru the Grace of our Precious Jesus, Bobby had a medical problem with his thumb on his right hand, and for a while could not dazzle us with his artistry.

I pray that the Lord will make his hand whole again, so that he can once again delight ALL who have the pleasure of seeing him dance across those strings.

God richly bless you Bobby, and all of you,

carl

Russ Wever did a teaching tape on this years ago, which Scotty still sells. As I recall, it had the bassline on strings 9 and 10, using pedal 5 and also open strings. Don't recall pedal 8 in there, but maybe it was...

Dirk,
Sounds like you got a good start on it. (and P8 is definitely used) The 'bass part' is as you describe. I've played it on both 10 string C6 and E9/B6 U12. The ending is really cool, too.

I believe we've tabbed out parts of it. I'd suggest searching the Forum -- Pedal Steel, Tablature, and the old Bar Chatter Archive would be good places to start.

Good luck. It's a good exercise in ear training just working it out -- a bit like Chet playing 'Yankee Doodle' and 'Dixie' at the same time.

Forgive me for horning in.But I could not let someone pay me the kind of compliment Carl Dixon payed me without thanking him publicly. Carl, you have me overrated. But it's the greatest feeling in the world to know you've touched someone with your playing, the way I apparently touched you.I know how you feel about Buddy. I feel the same.

As for my medical condition.I have writers cramp Dystonia. Some days I can play most anything I want. And some days It's a struggle to pay anything. At least anything I want to hear. All in all I do feel blessed.Ten years ago my doctors told me I'd have to give it up.But I was luckly enough to have a boss who kept me on,payed me more than anyone else in the band.Even though at that time I could not use my right thumb at all.And really did not pull my weight.Today I can use my thumb. Thanks to medication.Though I don't always have the power and control I need.Sorry this got so long.Again Carl. My sincere thanks!-------Bobby
