I had a George L's 10-1 in my LeGrande 'til tonight. I didn't like it and a fella asked if I would sell it; so I told him I would. I've used E-66s on a couple of my guitars as well.........I've pretty much been less than satisfied with the tone I get from George L's p/ups.
Anyhow, I took the s/c outta the C6 neck and put it on the E9 'til I decide what I want to drop in there......but I like the way the original p/up sounds fine....much better than what I took out of it. I had plans for dropping a Lawrence 710 in there.......now I'm wondering if I should just find another Emmons s/c and put on the C6 neck.
How far apart are the original Emmons from the Lawrence 710 in terms of tone and output?
I like the clean tones of a s/c, but the quiet of a humbucker.

Rod,
I believe that's why Bill makes the 910 -- as a less noisy replacement for single coil pickups. The 710 is brighter than a single coil, in my experience.

Since I got my first Emmons D-10 in '77, I have used the stock Emmons pickups and still like their sound.

A friend has a 2 year old Legrande II. He took the original single coil pickups out and put in Lawrence 710's. Still has the Emmons sound but without the single coil hum.
He tried the Lawrence 510's and didn't like them. |

I have no hum problems with the Emmons single coils on my '75 P/P. I practice with the amp sitting about 2 FT. from the RH end of my guitar and I can't detect any more noise than with the humbuckers on my other guitars.

I have two Emmons. One is stock. The other has the BL Seven-Tens. The stock is single coil while the BL is a humbucker. I like both, but really love the growl of the Lawrence. The stock Emmons guitar sounds very similar to my Carter with E66 pups.

Back when I played an Emmons S-12, I got fed up with the hum in a couple of venues we played at often, so I dropped in an E-66. The only difference to my ear was no hum. The E-66 sounded just like the stock pickup to me. Having said that, I will point out that I have heard a couple of guitars with E-66 pickups and did not like the tone at all.

IMHO the Lawrence 710 is THE pickup for the LeGrande, hands down.
The pickup in my old push-pull is getting quite prone to 60-cycle hum, so I called Danny Hullihen about a replacement pickup for it which would run quiet but retain "that tone". He recommended the 910 Lawrence as an ideal replacement unit for the single coil Emmons pickup. I have not ordered the pickup yet but will be doing so very soon. Danny keeps various types and brands of steel guitar pickups in stock at Harrison Music and is an expert on pedal steels in general, so I trust his judgement on this. I believe his exact words were something like "I could sell you a more expensive pickup, but not a better one for this application". So check out the 910 if you want to duplicate the single-coil sound without the hum factor.

That's exactly what I'm trying with my Fessy (except that it's a Fessy and it's a 12-string -- maybe it's not so similar after all  ). Jerry's gonna send me a 912 to replace the 712 that's on there now. I was getting too much high mids and I'm hoping this will help. Film at 11. Lets compare notes.

BTW: In '98 Buddy had this to say about single coil pick-ups:
