Which delay pedal would you recommend for Steel?

Thanks in advanced

For lowest cost with a good analog type delay sound I like the Guyatone MD3:

For a little more cost, I like the the MXR Carbon Copy:

I tried the Line 6 Echo Park but sold it after getting the Carbon Copy:

I like and have Danelectro echo 30-40 bucks and a RV3, both good.
Pod XT I just bought used for 100 with a slight learning curve.
Pretty vague question you might spell out what you want and need.

Without question, the Diamond Memory Lane analog delay is the best sounding pedal I've tried.

Of course, nothing beats a real Echoplex tape delay or an oil can delay...but they each have their own "issues."

And I am a delay aholic.

Another vote for the Guyatone MD-3...I've tried many delays and my search ended several years ago with the Guyatone

The Pod XT is very good if you're only using one amp, but if you use 2 amps, and want a stereo slap back echo, you'll have to use another delay unit, set 100% wet, on one of the Pod's outputs.

I thought that the unit might be capable of a stereo slap back echo and I just didn't know where it was or how to program it, but I spoke to the tech support guys at Line 6, and they confirmed that although multiple delays can be programed to ping pong between the 2 outputs, it is not possible to program the Pod to have the initial signal go to one output and the delayed signal go to the other.

I've been using the DD3 Digital Delay for years. I run it thru a NV-1000. Set the reverb around 3, low about +8, high about -3, presence at -3, mid at -12 and shift at 800. First 3 knobs on delay, I set about 10:00.

T. C. Electronic "Flashback".

Greg, you should review this one. I don't have a lot of experience with delay pedals but seems it'd be tough to beat the features and sound quality of this one for the price.

I think this is a fairly new model pedal.

I'm lovin' mine.

Though it is a little expensive, the Strymon El Capistan is the best stomp box delay I have used.

Here`s another plug for the t.c. flashback.

Instead of a tap footswitch it uses what they call "audio tap", means that you keep the on/off footswitch pressed for a moment and the delay mutes and records your rhythmic strum or click on the strings as the new tap tempo, it then can play either 1/4s(same as you strummed), dotted 1/8ths (Albert Lee style cascade delay) or 1/4+1/8.
Very convenient!

It offers switchable true or buffered bypass and has a whole bunch of different characters:
clean delay(2290), analog, tape, LoFi, ducked delay, mod delay, PingPong (it`s stereo) reverse delay and a looper.
The last setting they call "toneprint" is a USB user loadable setting from a choice of special presets available through t.c.`s website (The 2290 or the tape setting is just fine for me but the others are fun to experiment with).

I mounted mine on a small board together with the volume pedal and the tuner. The 9Volts supply to power the board comes through the output cable. The other end of the cable connects through a regular XLR jack, pin1 and pin2 are GND and audio, pin3 carries -9V. XLR female with wallwart and jack cable is in the back of the Vibroverb.
That way it`s easy to move and fast to connect and set up.

That's great you ran down the features of the Flashback, Pit. I was too lazy!

I use the "dynamic delay" setting which is the ducked delay setting you mentioned. Since the effect lowers in volume if you're picking, it allows for more effect gain than you otherwise might choose to use. I like that setting because it keeps all picking clean as the unit "ducks" out of the way.

Cool way to power a pedal, Pit.

Wow...looks like an improved take on the Empress Super Delay. Strymon makes great stuff (Timeline has the great El Capistan circuit and more...). Thanks

Man, that Timeline looks and sounds amazing, as does El Capistan. One thing Strymon has over the other companies is GOOD DEMOS on their website! And their pedals are all very nice. Bit out of my price range right now, but they're definitely on my radar. If anyone has recordings of steel guitar through their reverb pedal or any of their delays, I'd love to hear it. Same with the Flashback.

I have a guitar player friend that used an old KMD analog delay until it quit. He has tried several both analog and digital and he turned me on to the MXR Carbon Copy. Recently he bought a ROGUE digital delay and he likes it. I have heard him play through it and it sounds good to me but I haven't had the chance to try it.

I've been watchin ebay for a Guyatone MD-3, but I've only seen an MD-5 which is more than I want to pay, around $175 was what one of them cost, but I saw a micro MD-2 digital delay. Are they just as good as the MD-3? The micro MD-2 was $66, I can get a carbon copy for about $115. But Don't want to buy the CC if it ain't gonna last long. Thanks

A Blue SIB Echodrive as long as you don't need tap tempo or super long delays. The tube warmth it adds is well worth finding one.

The lunatic on Ebay asking $1000.00 for one must be related to PT Barnum. It never sells so maybe there ISN'T a sucker born every minute.

I'm waiting for the 2nd batch to be released soon. But the MXR Carbon Copy delay does have a nice analog sound, with slight chorus if needed.

Boss RE20 works good for me. I also use Digitech echo unit just to get a variation of echo sounds.

Often imitated but never equaled...best sounding delay of all time (tube version slightly better than this EM-1 "Groupmaster"-basically an EP-3 with a 4 channel mixer built in)

That sure looks familiar Geoff! I'm glad you're enjoying it.

Some of the studio plug-in's sound incredible IMO. I was really impressed by the echoplex setting from Soundtoys. I know almost nothing about recording and software, but when the engineer clicked on that one, I made sure to ask what it was.

For pedals, I like my boss dm-2. To me, digital pedals tend to have a high end chirp that I don't like, and analog pedals can sound a little muffled and unpronounced. The dm-2 that I have seems to fall in the middle somewhere. I'm learning that the best pedal isn't always the best for your rig. From the strings to the speaker, everything has to work together well to give you the sound you're going for.

I guess you've gotten enough input already to last a lifetime, so I'm hesitant to add one more. I've been using a Maxxon delay pedal which is similar to the old Ibanez analog delay, and I'm very fond of it.

Best of luck.
