Topic: How do you play "Oklahoma Stomp"? |

I've really been struck by the tune "Oklahoma Stomp", Joaquin Murphey's signature piece with Spade Cooley and His Orchestra. Does anyone have any hints on how to play this song (besides the usual "practice, practice, practice")?

Brad,
Buddy Emmons has that song in his expo e9
tape/tab
It is tabbed for e9th with pedals, but I bet you could adapt it.

| Brad: I'm just going on memory here, but as I recall Stacy Phillips had a transcription of Oklahoma Stomp in his first Dobro book. Offhand, though, I don't remember whether it was the whole song or simply the solo. |

Brad, I started playing this tune in the early 50s. I played it in both the C#minor9th and the E13th tunings. Of course I didn't play it note for note but pretty close, especialy from the beginning until the 'ad lib' part started. The secret is the forward slant for the 4 chord. I'm sure you know where I talking about. If I can help further, email me.

Hey Brad; I play the song often. Which parts do you need help with? I can tab some sections for ya; but to tab the whole song would be very very long. One thing that makes it very easy to play is the proper tuning. I don't know which E13 tuning you might have but here is mine.

G#
F#
E
D
These intervals make it so easy to play; and I can tab some sections for you on this tuning; off the top of my head. But if you need help with this song in another tuning; I'll need my steel to do it; and I don't have it with me this weekend (out of town)
Let me know if you need help and which parts.

Thanks for the replies. I've been using A6/F#m7 on my Deluxe (F# A C# E F# A C# E, bass to treble) but I can easily switch; I might even have the other tuning on another guitar. Perhaps it's just me being unable to get my ears around the song.
Ian, I have "The Dobro Book" and it doesn't have that song in it. It does have Stacy's amazing transcription of Jim & Bob's "Song of the Range" - still one of the most amazing solos in steel guitar history, in my opinion.

| Brad, It may not be the Dobro Book, but on eof those Stacy Phillips dobro tutorials definitely has Oklahoma Stomp. There are two that I know of. There is a thinnish one with a green cover, and another, bigger , book that has a picture of Stacy Phillips and his dobro. I'm sorry to be so vague, but both these books are at home and I am at work, so I can't take a look at the moment. I remember the tab was for open G tuning, I tried to work it out for C6 but it takes a better man than me to manage that. Too many slants and note bends for me. |

Well Brad I'm gunna tab the song in sections for ya and alot more folks want to play this song too. I'm gunna use the E9/13 tuning I showed you there hopefully to encourge this E tuning more>I love it and wouldn't do without it. I can play the song on any tuning; but to have the 6th and the 9th and the b7 in a tuning is just the coolest to me. Look for it in sections over on the Share a lick area. Oh and I'm gunna tab B.Bowman Hop in that tuning also; for the folks that are interested too. I'm held up in a motel room for the weekend here in Dallas so I have some time and I think I'm pretty sure I can do it off the top of my head>

Ok the first section of Oklahoma Stomp is up on "Share a Lick/Turnaround". Next section will be the steel solo; then you can play the first section again later in the song because I combined somethings with that section from the two. Have fun.
