An E13th tuning is much better suited to Panhandle Rag. With the A6th you have to play it too far up the neck and the tone becomes too mushy. On the E13th. play it in the key of E and use some open strings in the first passages and bridge.

..or play it in D on a G6 tuning. Most parts will be in 2nd, 7th, and 12 positions.

Here's two of the E13th tunings I used to use on my non-pedal Steel:

Low to High: G# B D F# G# B C# E {could be same as Boggs}

Or B D F# G# B C# E G#

Billy, that E13 you listed is the one Vance terry used. I believe Noel Boggs' E13 was:
E
C#
B
G#
F#
D
B
G#
E

According to Winnie Winston's book(Pedal Steel Guitar) he lists Bud's tunings as E9, high to low as: E-B-G#-F#-D-B-G#-E-C#-A .... Also A9, High to low as: A-E-C#-B-G-E-C#-A-F#-D
I guess he only used a couple of pedals and one knee lever on each neck.

The E9 tuning I use is the same as the first 8 strings of the tuning you posted, Dana. I recorded Bud's Bounce with it, although it doesn't sound all that much like Bud.

Howzit Mike,I listened to your recording and it sounds good to me. I also read a li'l of your blog, especially about your (almost) quitting the steel. I can relate. I started on an early seventies Maverick, played it(self taught) for 16 years got fed up with the guitar breaking strings and having no teacher/technician anywhere near where I lived at the time(Fresno)so I sold it.Big mistake, It took me about 21 years before I got in the position to afford another pedal steel that was better. I kicked myself for 21 years!
I agree that music is an evolution and it's natural to explore other instruments and other alternate tunings. I view them as rut busters.
I would like to explore the C6, B11,A6, and A9 especially as I am addicted to Hapa Haole music and always run there for refuge. I have played so many genres of music over the years. I've played the guitar for over 48 yrs.!Problem is I've so many instruments now that it has become a "space" problem!
Lately I've thought of converting my old '65 Gibson LG-1 to a lap steel(acoustic C6)as it needs the bridge and nut replaced.
I enjoyed your posts about music theory a while back. Later Dana
