Just listened to John Hartford's recording of Gentle On My Mind. What a great steel break. Anyone tell me who it was? Gotta have that record.

I do not know this version.
I have a record by him called "Nobody Knows What You Do", that features Buddy Emmons on a couple of songs. |

It's Buddy Emmons. Classic tone and a burning solo. |

Buddy on the C6th. That was one of the first things I ever learned on the C6th, and I wore out the record (at half speed). |

That's one of those "kick my steel into the Bay" solos. Amazing!

Joe, can you just kick your steel (and chops) up to Oregon instead? |

Thanks Mike!
Warning: for some of the lines in there Buddy had a change which raised F->A, A->C, and C->D (essentially, a C6th with the 9th down low). |

yup.
As I recall, there wasn't much pedal use in that solo. |

Hartford was a HUGE fan of BE - and he always surrounded himself with great musicians, Vassar Clemmons, Tut Taylor, Norman Blake, etc and often put them AHEAD of himself really, when asked. This is seldom done today with sidemen.
John often said he learned his unique phrasing from BE _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |

In the second half of the seventies John made several records for Flying Fish. All these records are more or less in the same spirit and with almost the same crew.
Buddy is featured as a mayor player on all of them on his D-10 and S-12. Album titles are:
Nobody knows what to do
Slumbering on the Cumberland
You and me at home
All in the name of love
(are there any more?)
Tennessee Jubilee by Benny Martin features mostly the same musicians and Emmons also on dobro and in my opinion belongs to the same serie
All of these albums are great stuff for “Big E” fans, that must be all of you! |

Well, I care. And I guess Dan's roding that big pedal change he mentioned.
No really it's one of my all time favorite solos. I hacked out a version years ago when it 1st came out. I'd never heard of the pedal changes Dan mentioned at that time. Maybe that was a good thing. I'd have used the old. ( That's not on my guitar) excuse. And never tried.
I can see where lowering the middle E to D will come in handy. My printers down. So I'll write it out and maybe learn it with all the right notes this weekend.
Thanks again. I for one appreciate your efforts.

Thanks Mike! It's a great version of the song. I really love what Kenny Malone played on drums. Buddy played on a few Hartford albums from this era, all with some amazing soloing. I'll have to dig them out and give them a listen. |

Thank You for the Tab. Never paid much attention to No Pedal work, but this one opened my eyes. Great Job. Ray |

The link above plays 4 songs from an album by him from '69.
No steel guitar, but lots of beautiful string and brass arrangements.
Close the other mp3's because they start playing at the same time! |
