Editing drum tracks?

No matter which style I choose, I find there's almost always too much for drums. Alot of cymbals and drum rolls that sound like somebody knocked over their trash can. Usually all you need is a subtle beat, like a metronome. Is there any way to edit the drum styles without shutting them off completely? Using the A/B sub styles don't change it much.
