It's been a while since I got up early one Sunday in St. Louis to see and hear Smiley play..Even "E" was up at that hour with a great big smile on his face as Smiley put smiles on many faces with his version of the Pete Drake talk box steel....The whole world needs more Smiles..

John, glad you posted some of Smileys playing. In my judgement Smiley is a extremely good player as this clip demonstrates. By the way, I understand your remark.
I have wondered how Smiley is doing these days. He used to post on here quite often but I have not seen him on here for a while. I hope he is well and happy.

So I am curious John,
If I understand correctly, you say that the ISGC has been putting some "worse players than Smiley" on the stage.

I don't recall seeing you at the convention ever.

So where do you get your information?

I too would like to see Smiley on the show. I feel sure there is a reason why he is not.

Here's a link to last year's schedule... so you'll know who all the "worse" players are:

I understand what John is trying to say..Smiley is a Journeyman steeler who has toured with top Artist and still makes a living doing the only job he has ever had for well over 50 years, sitting behind a Steel Guitar..When I started the thread I was curious because of a question asked me by friends in Ireland who asked me that question..Everyone has favorite players..As age catches all and the many respected greats are gone and others give up doing shows,I just thought that Smiley as many do belongs..He has not attended the last few years because he was asked to fill in for players who did..If a successful career in this music business means anything, respect from ones peers tops the list..

I would never second-guess the ISGSC board members who decide these things. I don't envy their responsibility because they have so many more
players who qualify than they can select for the current year.

God bless you guys......you pay a dear price for your decisions.

......and I need to add that Smiley is one of my favorite players......among many!

Okay, I'll confess to ignorance here. What does ISGSC stand for, and who are the board members? (Bored members? Razz )

I'm a big fan of Smiley Roberts but since I won't be at the convention this year I'll save my breath for next year.

Well Bob, I guess you think that you put me in my place...wherever that is. For the record, I didn't intend to offend you, and of course Smiley is one of my favorite people from way back, but whatever you choose to interpret as a negative from my post, this Forum is your baby and you can interpret it anyway you choose!

Now, hurry and close this topic before you hear any response that doesn't agree with you!

Gene, you're reading something between the lines that was not intended. I was not aware that a board determines who will play at the ISGC. I thought it was just Scotty. I'm sincere here - who's on the board?

To clear up one very important point: The Steel Guitar Hall of Fame Committee DOES NOT select who plays on the show at ISGC. Those decisions rest in the hands of one person only: DeWitt Scott.

OK, my mistake. I interpreted this topic as another of those "why hasn't 'name your choice' been nominated for the HOF" complaints!

As for my inclusion of the extra "S" in my reference to the ISGC, I deserve 40 lashes for my blasphemy and an apology to Bob. Rolling Eyes

By the way Smiley, I still have and appreciate the Diamond Ballroom t-shirt that you sent me from your appearance there in the 1960's. When I was in the houseband at the Diamond they never gave me one. Sad [/b]

Bob, I interpreted your post questioning the extra "S" in ISGSC as condescending to my intelligence, so I reacted accordingly. I accept your explanation in good faith and wish to end this disagreement.

You are presenting a good website for the steelguitar world, and I appreciate what you have done.

No problem, Gene. I understand what happened. Water under the bridge.

It would be great to hear Smiley play at the ISGC.
