Dan played on all songs on Gary's "Smoke Rings In The Dark" record. When that record came out, Gary's steel player on the road was Mike Fried. Mike was Gary's steel player from 1996 to 2006 when CJ Udeen joined Gary's band. Before CJ started touring with Gary, he was playin' steel with Andy Griggs. Mike played a Sho-Bud and GFI for Gary, while CJ played a Mullen, and I believe he now plays a Show-Pro on tour with Gary. I believe the steel Dan played on "Smoke Rings In The Dark" record was an older Zumsteel.

Dan does not and has never played a ZUM. He did Smoke Rings on his early 70's rounde front Sho-Bud Pro-II. Same guitaqr he recorded Blus Bayou with.

Kevin, you know somethin'? I kinda knew it waas a Sho-Bud cause it sounded like one. Mike Fried thought it was a Zum.

Dan has tried a couple or three other guitars over time. Mostly Sho-Buds, but kept coming back to that original Pro-II round front for most of his studio work over the decades. He's got Black's blue P/P and could use it any time he wants. He uses his LDG alot for demos, but that big PRO-II is in cartage and gets hauled out for his master sessions, along with a black face Twin Reverb.. He also owns a Show-Pro which he thinks highly of.
