The many times country rock comes up in this forum I have never heard John Starling's name mentioned . He put out 2 outstanding albums Long Time Gone and Waiting On A Southern Train .
Long Time Gone in particular stands out as a gem of the genre with a load of talent on board including Emmy Lou , Lowell George and Bill Payne from Little Feat and many more , Buddy Emmons plays some great understated pedal steel .

Oh yeah!!

Long time Gone is real gem !
Lowell George and Buddy Emmons soloing on the title track, loads of Mike Auldridge, Ricky Scaggs etc.....
Starling is ,of course, a veteran of the group Seldom Scene with Auldrige and John Duffey.
BTW, he has a new (2007) CD out called Slidin Home. Auldridge on dobro and steel,songs include Willin`and In My Hour of Darkness.

One of the first songs we learned when we put a "country rock" band together was "Long Time Gone" off that John Starling album. We did an extended solo in it and did it many rock clubs.

Both albums are great with their mix from country rock to acoustic bluegrass. Also Mike Auldridge played some pedal steel, besides his great Dobro work.

While John Starling was still a member of the Seldom Scene, they released an album titled "The New Seldom Scene Album" which was a mixture of modern Bluegrass and Country Rock. This I believe was Mike Auldridge's recorded debut on steel. "Easy Ride From Good Times To The Blues" is my favorite cut.

The Hosford record A.K.A. Lorenzo has Ed Black at his finest...a very hard to find record. Winking

......the other Larry Hosford album has Ernie Hagar on pedal steel.
Once in a while I still listen to John Starling's records and they are terrific,there's also Danny Pendleton on steel which we know from Emmylou's"pieces of the sky"album.

One of my favorite Larry Hosford songs were, "The King Takes The Queen, Everytime". It's hard to believe the song was Country-Rock. But it was a catchy tune never the less.

Used to play a song named "The Great Pretender" by Michael Dinner, but don't recall the album.....
