More pics added below and a couple of revisions to the text here:

Without recounting too much conjectured history and speculation about this odd piece and how it came to be, suffice it to say that it's a player's Stringmaster D-8, 24-1/2" scale at a player's price. It began life as a T-8 and lost the lower neck sometime between the launch of Sputnik and the present. The jack is now top-mounted in a non-standard way between the volume and tone knobs (lower neck) and the neck-selector switch is a toggle sitting atop a white plastic trapezoid plate (upper neck).

When I got it last year, I noticed the blend knobs dialed the volume out completely. Aha: front pickups were missing on each neck. The voids under the front pickup covers have been filled with Seymour Duncan Antiquitys and everything put back together by Jim Palenscar. It plays and sounds like it should.

I don't recall any date clues like pencil marks or pot dates from when I first got it and discovered the missing pickups. Best guess: late 50s, early 60s.

Looks are a different matter. This has been repainted brown, with various chips and fills and attempted cover-ups Revising an earlier note, it looks as if the second paint job was applied directly on top of the original finish (judging from the chips.) It has been converted from four legs to three. (If it were me, I'd look some flanges with a wider angle. This sits just a tinch upright for my tastes.) Legs are included. Leg bag by Glad. No decal on front. This comes in an oversize brown tolex ('60 or later) pedal steel case. I just found a few odd pieces of stiff foam to pads this D-8 inside the oversize case.

Fine-sounding Stringmaster at a Deluxe price.

$800 shipped in the lower 48 is less than I have in it. Even less than before. No doubt this will create a frenzy of enthusiasm in Florida, Maine or points nearly as distant.

If interested, please email weissenben(AT)earthlink(dOt)net (same as in the SGF email link.) If not interested, let's just watch this sink to page 3 in a couple of days and fly over to eBay the day after.

Hi Joe:

Indeed it is (and I need an excuse to come to SD or at least Oceanside.)
