Mark Fidrich of the Detroit Tigers was found dead today at his home. Mark was known as Big Bird on the Tigers' World Series team back in the 1970's. He was in his 50's. Also Harry Kalas broadcaster for the Philadelphia Phillies, died today in the broadcast booth prior to the Phillies game, He was 73. A sad day for the National Passtime.

Mark "The Bird" Fidrych died in an accident while working on a pickup truck - http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2009/04/fidrych_killed.html

Mark was on the Tigers most of the time I was in Detroit myself - mid-70s to early 80s. He was an inspired pitcher who, unfortunately, tore his rotator cuff in '77 - and that went undiagnosed till the mid-80s, well after he was out of baseball. Being another Boston guy in Detroit at the time, I was a big fan. He was completely down to earth, and all about the game for its own sake.

Harry Kalas too? Good Lord, it is a bad day for baseball. Another one of those guys that just loved baseball for its own sake, Harry's gonna be missed big-time. Story here.

Dave, sometimes I don't understand why the Lord takes people away. Harry Carey of the Cubs was another broadcaster of the game, that I liked also. Along with Jack Buck. To me these guys were giants.
