I know it has been asked SOOOOO many times before. But does anyone know the amp settings Paul Franklin uses? I know he uses a rack set-up, but could you approximate it for a Peavey Nashville 400? One website said his amp settings for a Session 400 are Low- Off, Mid-??, Shift-??, Treble- +8 or +9,presence- +3, and reverb- +8. But this just dont sound right to me. Can someone help?

2-Nashville 400's (in 1983):
Pre-Gain = 5
Low = ±0dB
Mid = –7.5dB
Shift = 800Hz
High = +3dB
Pres. = +3dB
Rev. = 5
Master = 10

Amp#1- Low+9,Mid-6,Shift 500Hz,High+3,Presence-3
Amp#2- Low+6,Mid-9,Shift500Hz,High 0,Presence+3

Paul may also be using a Walker Stereo Steel rig at times.
One must keep in mind his guitar-pickups-cords-volume pedal-effects-picks-bar-strings-speaker-mic placement.
Let's then not for about Paul the player.
Turn all of your tone controls to 10 and back off of the ones you do not like and then play your little heart out.

Even identical equipment and settings won't give anyone the identical sound anyway! It's kinda a waste of time to even try, but; at least you'll know you're not completely wrong with your approach!

You are right John. I've tried to get that sound for a while now and I have just given up on that. The best advice is to tweak it in as close as you can to where it sounds good to you. I have the same preamp, effect, poweramp, and speakers as Paul and I can never get it sounding like his recordings. Maybe close but no cigar. I think I have learned my lesson now that I just need to be myself.

Over the years I have learned to listen intently to Paul or Buddy or Randy and then try to pick apart the sounds I hear.
Robust lush bass - harder edgey(sp) bass
Shrill highs - smooth highs
Boxy(sp) mids - present mids
Swirling reverb - tight reverb - no reverb
It takes years and then just when you think you are there it all changes again, I think this is due to ones growth and understanding.
Here in the NW the brother hood has spent years in verbal banter on this same subject. In fact several of us are getting together again this Sunday to compare pre amps-amps. We have all played for over 35 years and still it never ends. Oh we got some fun now,

| Thanks Larry, reading that post like your last one gives me a ray of hope, when vetrans like you guys are still searching for "that sound" I don't feel so down and out about my tone, although I will say, the Walker Rig helped my tone tremendously, and for a fact Paul uses Gerry Walkers rigs, I heard it from Gerry directly, he purchased two of Gerrys rigs if I remember correctly.
