Yeah, when I attended Jeffran College back in 1984 (Buddy E.did a guest drop in), I picked up a bunch of sets, most of which I still use. They were chromed then. Don't know about now. Am tempted to get some of those picks I've read about on The Forum recently that have the inside material that helps grip them to the fingers. steve t

I guess these are all finger picks? Or does the first paragraph pertain to thumbpicks? I don't know any thing about them - and there's no photos on the website, just this:

Quote:
Great Picks Are Back!
Custom shaped and cut; in three sizes and two colors.
Sizes: Large, medium, or small
Colors: Bright red with white trim or Bright yellow with black trim.
$4.00 each

Regular nickle/silver finger picks.
They are all .026" thick.
Two for $5.00

Can someone help me out here?

Best picks made. I have been using the same pair for going on ten years now. I would go through at least 2 sets a year (bands would break at the holes) when using Nationals. Plus I could never get any other brand to bend right and they would hurt like heck. Jeff's picks are pre bent on the band which helps considerably when making them fit right. You don't even know you are wearing them, they are so comfortable.

First part is their thumb picks.

Mark, you are right, the first paragraph refers to the Jeffran thumbpick (not shown in Bill's pic). I quite liked the comfort and tone of the JF thumbpick - fairly bright - but the one I had had a flaw and didn't last more than a week.

I agree about the fingerpicks - the best for tone that I've tried. Much better than the new National NP2's which are terrible in my opinion.

Thanks Jonathan. And thanks Bill, for the photo.

I don't know if Fran Newman keeps up with the goings on here, but if it were my business, I would clarify the verbiage in that section of the site, and it wouldn't hurt to post a couple of photos there.

Yep... you guys are right. I was at Jeffs one time and he gave me a set of the finger picks and some thumb picks. He told me if there was someone trying to play steel that I didn't like, to give them those Nationals I had. I've used their picks ever since that time.

I got my first set of these from Jeff in 82 when I went to his school .... that first pair lasted for years. I always pick up a few extra sets from Fran when I go to the Dallas show ...but I end up giving them away to other players before I ever wear them out !! The best finger picks available IMO.

I got a set a few months ago, really like the finger picks. I didn't care for the tone of the thumb pick and then it broke. I didn't replace it. I saw a post by Herb Steiner, and he liked them for getting better tone high on the neck. He's right. They sound good. I'd been using Nationals forever. JFs are thicker metal, but very comfortable.

I think I should revise my previous comment. Based on how the National picks sounded when I first tried them I had almost discarded them. I went back to them yesterday and shaped the blades to the same angle as the JF's. Big difference in the tone. They now sound very close to the JF picks - perhaps slightly brighter.

Wow. I must be doing something wrong. I still have the Nationals I bought back in the '70's. I don't use them, because I wore the tips off of them. I've been using my second and third pair ('70's, too) ever since.

Wonder what's wrong with mine?

(I would like to see a pair of the Jeffran ones, though.)

Jeff's picks are the best I have ever used, I have been using the ones I have [4 or 5 sets of them] for a long long time. I think if you will try Jeff's picks, you'll throw all those silly looking ones away, that people think will make you play better, ha ha, the jokes on them - get them Jeff picks n o w

Hey BB and all! The JF picks have been working great for years. The combination of the picks, a BJS bar,and the rest of my current gear add up to the best sound I've ever heard(for me!). Glad to see that Fran is hanging in there for everybody...she still loves the business and all of you over the many years. I'm fortunate enough to have a gold-plated JF pick that I received as a wedding present from my wife. Play gooood!RK

I hadn't thought of that. I'll take some pics of my first set. They were a gift from Lloyd when I was a teenager. They were his.

I have a set of Jeff/Buddy picks that were given to me by a steel player friend a long time ago. On my picks they are stamped: "(BJ)" as I understand it; it was a pick that Buddy and Jeff had endorsed together?
Someone may be able to shead more light on these picks?

Jeffran finger picks are great but let me also give a word of praise to the Dunlap 0.0225 finger picks and the Zookie L-10 thumbs picks that I bought from Bill Stroud, they are also great, IMHO.
