What is the downside of using the cheaper, RTAS version of plugins for Pro Tools M_Powered? |

Only RTAS plugins can be used with M-Powered or LE versions of Pro Tools, they use your computer chip for processing, often called "native" plugins.
The TDM versions can only be used with a MIX or HD Pro Tools system, where the PCI cards have chips that will handle the processing. |

However you can get a "wrapper" from FXpansion which will allow you to use a lot of VST plug-ins, by fooling the PC that they are really RTAS.

To Dave's point, I use the FXpansion tool and it is slick. It opens up a new world of VST effects and instruments inside of Pro Tools. There is a huge number of freeware or shareware VST plug-ins that are available, many of which are excellent, in addition to those that are commercially available. I routinely use several VST effects and instruments in my work. _________________ Loren Claypool
