Bill, I just bought a Squire P bass yesterday,,under $150 with a stand and tax from guitar center,brand new. It is exactly what you're lokking for.

Thanks Jim, that does sound good. I was really hoping though to get an old Peavey T-40 or Foundation but I'll look into the Squires.

Bill.......have you looked at ebay? To each his own, but if the T-40 is what you want, there are several on ebay.
