This looks a lot like the guitar that David Phillips used to play, when I first met him in San Francisco. The knee lever crossbars and other parts have been removed. Whoa!

That's how I'd pick it.

In measure 2, it helps to engage the A pedal on beat before where it's picked. That makes a steady rhythm with your foot that will go to "muscle memory".
