I use the same picks for Dobro, lap steel, and banjo. National NP-2 fingerpicks and a Pro-Pik thumbpick, metal with a Delrin blade.

Yeah, that was the disadvantage of my using an auto body shop. I had to remove all the parts then reinstall everything after the paint job.

For a lap steel you don't really need 15 coats of lacquer. I've had excellent results with some auto body shops spraying an acrylic gloss.
