IIRC, Marshall Crenshaw put a pop filter on a mic and tapped it with a ball point pen to emulate a kick drum.

It seems very low on gain, how did you compensate for that ?

Studio One is a good choice, IMO.
It’s very user friendly.

It’s the DAW that I wind up using the most.

Also, you might give Reaper a try too.
It might not be the most user friendly DAW, but that’s probably because it’s at least one of the most customizable DAW’s available.
