Well I guess I will call her a '39 now. Good info!

Again, it isn't. The pickup was built 1940-2, and Mark has narrowed it down further to 1941.

Structurally, it's a non-issue. It's pretty common in old ebony boards, but as long as the board isn't loose from the neck and the frets aren't faling out, it's really just aesthetic. You can fill it ...

That all depends on what sound you're looking for (except for the hum, which cannot be caused by a "mismatched" pickup and amp).

It's currently set up in A6, with A on the bottom and E on top.

I custom ordered this from Beard and received it in 2017. As much as I love it, my musical priorities have shifted and it's a shame to see it gathering dust. Time to find it a new home!

It's a mode ...

According to [url=https://wiedler.ch/nyepireg/database.html#SNhead]the Epiphone serial database, it's a Zephyr 8-string from 1942.

No, the nut riser doesn't affect tension; people just tend to use heavier strings for steel than Spanish playing.

You really don't want to go with heavy strings on a biscuit-bridge guitar; there is no spider or T-bar casting protecting it, so the cone may crumple or crease. I would not attempt to play an pre-War ...

In one interview, Leon had complained about the necks being on the same level, so maybe that's why they built it that way:

That wouldn't have been a Rickenbacker, then; these had the necks at diff ...

The D-16 is not a particularly rare model (and this is not a DC-16); without the McAuliffe association this would be worth about 1/3 of the asking price.

It's not an Epiphone, though that does appear to be an inspiration behind it. It incorporates elements of early Vega steels too, though it's not one of theirs either.

There was an Australian builde ...

I prefer the sound of a shorter-scale steel, but that's just subjective. I find slanting easier on longer-scale steels because your intonation doesn't have to be as precise.

Cordovoxes were single-rotor speakers. That's a different sound from the Leslies commonly used with Hammond organs. You need a pedal that emulates a model 16 or 18 or Fender Vibratone specifically.

I can't find an exact match for it. It's certainly a late National-Dobro or early Valco creation; the first-generation string-through pickup dates it to 1940-2. It seems to combine features from sever ...

This is the first post-War version, built by Kay. Unfortunately their serials are not precisely datable, but they were catalogued by 1948 and replaced by the Valco-built version by 1953.

A slipping tuner is generally a sign that the gears are worn. There's no way to put that material back once it wears away. You can try swapping parts from another tuner but that's not easy on Klusons. ...

The trapezoids were designed to give better bass response than the boxcars... and it worked! Similar highs, but beefier lows on the traps.
