I use an .012 3rd string also, and have for more than 30 years with no breakage problems. They sound better too.

Assuming there was no battery leakage damage, I'd say it sounds like a bad filter cap in the power supply.

Maybe Ken Fox will chime in on this one. He has more experience with these units.

Well, no heatsink can work properly if it can't get enough airflow. The backs of these amps are open for a reason....they need free airflow.
