A larger cab can be made with 1/2 pine, or plywood if it's braced properly. The baffle board does need to be 3/4 ply (baltic birch ply is great) especially for high power applications.

It's no problem at all for a solid state amp. But no speaker (or load) on a tube amp would be certain death, and the magic smoke would escape.
