It's worth pausing to consider what is meant by "universal". To some it may suggest a wonder machine that can do anything.

I see it simply as a way of combining two necks into one by shar ...

Good explanation, Fred.
The joy of this instrument us that however high you go, it's all automatically in tune as long as you keep the bar straight. Surprise your friends!

Slants aside, I always assumed that a cavity in the base of the bar was a way of moving the centre of gravity nearer the nose.

It's been a while since I played a straight E9 with a 9th string D, but I seem to remember that where the change kicked in was also the half stop for the 2nd string D#-D-C#

It's quite a traditional change which is usually combined with the 2nd string lower. I find it easier to think of it as a C# rather than a Db

This is a slight digression, but I advise anyone starting out on D10 or moving up to one from a single E9 to tune the rear neck to B.
Even if they never play a uni 12, it still makes the two necks r ...

I don't necessarily agree with Robert. I started playing on a D10, and I soon decided I would swap to universal. So in preparation I tuned the back neck down from C6 to B6 to get used to the geograp ...

That would make sense to me. My setup has the same eight pedals as a D10. To me a 12-string universal is two necks overlapping by ten strings

Like Fred and Slim, I probably have the Es lowered roughly half the time. What makes me slightly B6-oriented is that I tune string 2 to C# and raise it to D or D# when E9 demands. (Of course C# to D i ...

By that criterion, E9 - I lower Es on RKR so I've voted accordingly.
When I was deciding on a universal setup I did consider the option of raising D#s instead. In the end, I wanted my right knee fre ...

I don't find a combination of upwards and sideways very convenient. A vertical lever works best with one or more pedals.

Although an upward lever is normally referred to as a vertical, it's actual ...

Simply put, pedals are more positive and faster acting and they can take the strain of more pulls than a lever.
This is why historically the most-used changes have generally been on the floor.

I have always been sceptical of raising 5 to D.
If in the AB position I want to raise the third on its own to a sus4, I release B, lower the Es, and slide up a fret (like Donny says).
If I want a IV ...

The steel needs to sound right in itself.
If you try to tune note for note with a keyboard you will sacrifice the sweetening you would normally use.
On my uni 12 I tune the E9 changes to JI for sono ...

Simple reverbs are very useful. The Telonics preamp has a built-in reverb which has no adjustments other than the amount, but they've chosen parameters that work pretty well for most things. If Keith ...
